Referral Process

Admission to the Hospice Palliative Care Program is by physician referral.  As part of the referral process, the referring physician:

  • has determined the client is in the last three to six months of life
  • has discussed the diagnosis and prognosis with the client and family
  • and client and family are no longer pursuing curative treatments and understand that treatment is now directed at comfort and management of symptoms (i.e. palliative care)
  • has gained the client’s consent or the consent of the client’s designated legal representative to the referral
  • has made the client aware of the per diem cost, and ambulance cost (if required) which are not covered by most extended health benefit plans

Admission Criteria - Moog & Friends Hospice House

Hospice House was developed with the sole purpose of providing palliative care to the terminally ill client who has symptoms and care needs associated with a disease that cannot be managed at home with the assistance of available community support services. The intent of Hospice House is to bring such symptoms under control, establish a care routine that can be managed at home and draw on appropriate community resources to assist the family in carrying this routine out.

Admission to Hospice House is determined by the following criteria:

  • referred to and accepted into the Hospice Palliative Care Program (as above)
  • the family and referring physician are responsible for daily care in Hospice House. In the event of the absence of the referring physician, a locum must be named and care is turned over to the HPC Medical Director
  • a Do Not Resuscitate form and a Palliative Benefits form must be obtained for all clients and must be signed by the client and the physician
  • the client shall have symptoms that cannot be controlled at home
  • admissions must be accompanied by orders from the attending physician

Types of Hospice Admissions

  • Symptom Management and Pain Control (5-10 days)
  • Respite (1-2 weeks)
  • End of Life – client is in last three weeks of life

What to Expect - Moog & Friends Hospice House

Moog & Friends Hospice House staff -- strive to meet, through patient-directed supportive interventions, the physical, social and spiritual needs of our residents and their families with sensitivity to their personal cultural and religious beliefs. Hospice palliative care welcomes and encourages your participation in your or your loved one’s care.

Moog & Friends Hospice House offers a private, furnished bedroom and completely equipped shower room for each resident. Each room is equipped with a wheelchair and walker, Cable TV with remote, CD/DVD player, cassette and radio, telephone with direct line access.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I bring electronic equipment and furniture from my home?

Please do not bring electronic equipment or furniture from home as we are regulated by safety policies from Interior Health.

2) Is there a cost to stay at Hospice?

Yes there is a daily rate for your stay at Hospice House regulated by the Ministry of Health. An invoice will be mailed to your home address from Interior Health’s Accounts Receivable office at the end of each month.  If you have any questions regarding your bill or you wish to pay at Hospice House, please see the Administrative Assistant.  You will also be responsible for Skaha Pharmacy and BC Ambulance charges not covered by the Palliative Care Program.

3) What shall I bring?

Please bring personal toiletries including shampoo/body wash & Kleenex, denture container, dressing gown, slippers, razor, and any other personal items you feel you will need.

4) Can I bring valuables?

A small locked cupboard is available for your convenience; however, it is requested that you do not bring money or valuables with you.  Moog & Friends Hospice House cannot accept responsibility for valuables in your possession.

5) What about confidentiality?

We are committed to protecting the privacy of your information. It is standard practice to provide people who phone and ask about you with information confirming your admission and location.  If you do not wish us to release this information, please inform our staff.

6) Can my family stay and eat with me?

Hospice House provides residents with nutritionally balanced meals. For family and visitors, only coffee and tea are available, cost is by donation. There is a cafeteria located at the Penticton Regional Hospital in the basement of the Central Pavilion. Vending machines are located in the main lobby and the Hospital Auxiliary gift store sells frozen dinners.

7) Where can I smoke?

Hospice House and Interior Health are SMOKE FREE INSIDE & OUT. Visitors, family, contractors, and staff are NOT permitted to smoke on any IHA property. If a patient obtains doctor’s orders, he/she may smoke outside on the back patio only!

8) What about alcohol?

A resident must be prescribed alcohol by a physician and although permitted, alcohol should be used cautiously due to possible adverse reactions with medication. A two-drink limit is enforced for the resident, family members and friends. 

9) Are fragrances a problem?

Hospice House and Interior Health buildings are scent-free. All strongly scented personal care products as well as heavily scented floral arrangements are not permitted.

10) We have a family pet, can he come to visit?

Pets may visit for short periods and must be on a leash at all times.

11) I need to stay in touch with family out of town, is there a telephone handy?

Each room has a telephone with a direct line access. Local calls are free. A personal long distance calling card is required for long distance calls.

12) What are the best times to visit?

With the awareness that time is precious and cherished we ask that the residents identify the family or significant friends who visit with them. Family can visit at any time and may wish to sleep over night on occasion. Please inform the RN on duty or the Coordinator if you wish to spend the night or visit after the doors are locked at dusk. Friends are encouraged to visit between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Short visits of a few visitors may be desired by the resident to prevent fatigue for the resident and allow for quiet times. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Please be respectful of other residents and their need for privacy, rest and a peaceful environment. Please keep noise and visits outside the room at night at a minimum.
